How many years have you been living in your home? 5 years? 10 years? Has it been decades?
If it’s been this long, you might be thinking if it’s about time to renovate. With our years of experience as a home renovation company in Perth, we have encountered different reasons why clients decide to renovate. Some have outgrown their old homes by having a much bigger family; others are just feeling bored with their current home design and would like to add a little more fun to their living space; and most clients really need to renovate because of clear indications that a remodel is in order.
No matter what your reason is for wanting to renovate your house, here are some signs that can make you finalise your decision:
1. Outdated Design
Do you get a sudden ‘blast from the past’ each time you enter your home? Then it may be time for a redesign. This is particularly true for vintage houses or those that are handed down from generations to generations.
Sure you may prefer a rustic feel or just really respect sentimental value. If that’s the case, then by all means, keep it. But if you’re thinking about home trends or simply planning to sell the house in due time, we strongly advise remodelling it.
2. Old and Faulty Fixtures
Old toilets and leaky taps in the bathroom; tile cracks and clogged sinks in the kitchen; and defective lighting fixtures in the bedroom. These are just some of the most common issues that an old home has. Some damages can be fixed and would not require a major adjustment. But if these issues are getting out of control and keep on coming back after just being fixed, they might be signalling that it’s time to do some major home upgrade.
3. Energy-Thirsty and Water-Thirsty Appliances
There are so-called ‘vampire appliances’ that are sucking up the power in your home. Similarly, ‘water-thirsty’ fixtures are those that require greater amount of water to work efficiently. These qualities are most common to obsolete appliances and fixtures such as your old fridge, clothes dryer, TV, shower heads, etc.
If this is the current situation, it is advisable to let go of these appliances and replace them with energy and water efficient ones. Before buying, check their Energy/Water Star Rating first. The higher the stars, the more efficient they are in terms of energy and water consumption.
4. Structural Indications
This is actually a no-choice scenario. As soon as possible, you need to renovate your home before you encounter a much bigger problem. Big wall cracks and foundation issues are clear indications. Not to scare you or anything, but you might be living in a house that is bound to collapse anytime soon.
Other signs that entail immediate action are termites damaging your walls and major electrical and plumbing problems.
5. Enough Funds
Budget is a key requirement to any home renovation. After all, you can’t run a car and reach your destination if you don’t have enough fuel. But if you finally got the funds for something that you have been dreaming of for a very long time, why not go for it?
